60-Second Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie
You are only a minute or so away from a decadent, delicious, chocolate chip mug cookie made start-to-finish in a mug and “baked” in the microwave!
This delightful mug cookie is our go-to treat fix when we want something sweet and tasty in a hurry!
A Few Tips to Make the Perfect Mug Cookie
After over a decade of making this chocolate chip mug cookie (regularly!), here are a few key tips to make sure it turns out perfectly!
- Use a microwave-safe mug or ramekin (a 6-ounce size works best).
- Mix the wet ingredients together first before adding the flour and chocolate chips.
- Measure the flour with a light hand (don’t pack it in). Too much flour and the cookie will be dry and crumbly.
- Follow the IMPORTANT microwave tips below. ⬇️
- Eat it warm! Right out of the microwave, preferably, with a scoop of ice cream.
The texture of the mug cookie is best right out of the microwave. As it cools, the texture hardens, so let me repeat: EAT THE COOKIE WARM! (Thanks for your patience while I shout in all caps – it’s an important message 😉).

Managing Expectations: Mug Cookie vs Fresh-Baked Cookie
After reading hundreds of comments on this chocolate chip mug cookie recipe over the last ten years, I think there is one thing we can all agree on:
A microwaved cookie is NEVER going to taste like a fresh-baked traditional chocolate chip cookie. So manage your expectations accordingly!
But, if you have a cookie craving and need to fill it within seconds, this chocolate chip mug cookie is for you!
Topped with a scoop of ice cream (and maybe even a drizzle of hot fudge), it is so yummy! The perfect go-to treat when you don’t feel like firing up the oven and making an entire batch of cookies.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mug cake recipes are very hit or miss, but I was desperate for a sugar hit when I found this recipe, so I decided to give it a shot. It’s really one of the best I’ve tried. Quick, easy, delicious. The ice cream is a MUST. Thanks for the recipe! -Lily
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I keep coming back to this recipe after many years! -Mer
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I cooked at 70 percent power just to be safe and it came out perfectly. It has the texture of a chocolate chip cookie bar, more so than a cookie, which is still obviously very delicious. -Paige
60-Second Chocolate Chip Mug Cookie
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon (14 g) melted butter or coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon (13 g) granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon (13 g) brown sugar
- ⅛ teaspoon vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
- 1 egg yolk
- ¼ cup (36 g) all-purpose flour (see note)
- 2 tablespoons (21 g) chocolate chips, regular size or mini
Instructions
- Very lightly coat the inside of a 6- or 8-ounce mug or ramekin with cooking spray, butter or coconut oil.
- To the mug or ramekin, add the melted butter, egg yolk, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla and salt. Mix until well combined.
- Add the flour (see note!) and chocolate chips. Stir until just combined. If the batter is dry and crumbly, add a splash of milk.
- COOKING INSTRUCTIONS: the exact cooking time will vary on the size/wattage of microwave you are using. For a 1,000 watt microwave, cook for one minute at 80% power. For a 1,200 or 1,500 watt microwave, cook for 45 seconds at 75% power. You may need to play around with the exact timing based on your microwave. The key is to NOT OVERCOOK the mug cookie. The top should puff and spring back lightly to the touch.
- Serve warm (don't let it cool! It is infinitely better served immediately) with ice cream, if desired.

I’m not sure what people are expecting with a mug cookie. It’s enjoyable and low hassle. I measured by weight and the mixture wasn’t dry at all. After “cooking” I’d rate the texture a 3 and the flavor a 4.
I love Mel’s recipes and use them often. This was the first one that was just kinda blah for me. Texture was weird and just generally speaking didn’t love it. Love literally everything else I’ve made off her page but mug cookies were one I won’t be repeating.
If you’re looking for a traditional chocolate chip cookie, this isn’t it. If your looking for a delicious mug cookie that hits the sweet tooth spot without the hassle and time, look no further. It’s not rocket science – mix wet ingredients, then add flour slowly so you don’t add too much. Don’t over microwave. *muah* delicious!
I made two and used a whole egg and they were perfect for a quick chocolate chip craving!!
This whole post makes me giggle. It’s like a bunch of people who haven’t baked much found your recipe and have no idea what to expect from a mug cake/cookie recipe! I kinda want to shout JUST TRUST MEL…or “my friend Mel,” as Jennifer Garner calls you on her pretend baking show! I love you Mel, and will give this recipe a try when I’m in a craving pinch!
its rubbery but i read the comments so it was my fault lol, i also needed a substitute for brown sugar so that could have been another problem, but other then that if you dont make the same mistakes as me im pretty sure it will be great!

I was somehow out of flour and had to use almond flour as a substitute – still tastes great!! I did add the full egg as well though, since I read somewhere that almond flour needs more moisture. While you can definitely taste that it’s almond flour, that’s normal for a lot of almond flour based goods. I had a pretty good time either way, even with the amended version, so thank you for the recipe!!
Love love love this! Especially when you’re trying to not snack and want something quick.
Guys, this recipe has been posted for a literal decade; it wasn’t written by AI. I’ve made this over a hundred times. Literally.
If it’s crumbly, you didn’t read through the instructions and didn’t mix the wet ingredients together first before mixing in the flour little by little. It should have the texture of thick pancake batter.
If it’s rubbery, you cooked it too long or at too strong power on the microwave. 60 seconds is intended for a 1000w microwave at 80% power. If you have 1500w microwave, 60 seconds is literally nuking it to death. Set it to 50% power and increase the time by 5 seconds. If you have an 800w microwave, keep it at 100% power for 60 seconds.
A REALLY GOOD RECIPE i was having a bad day but this recipe made my day so much better its SOOOOO delicious.
The texture was amazing along with the flavor! Top desserts I’ve ever had! 10/10 RECOMMEND
Thanks, Drew! So happy you loved this recipe – it really is a quick and easy dessert fix!
I’ve made mug cookies for years but have never used an egg-just a splash of water instead. I always add a pinch of baking soda which helps it rise. Try adding a spoonful of peanut butter or sub part of the flour for quick cooking oatmeal, delicious!
this gave me food poisoning DONT TRY THIS!!!!
Then cook it better??? Lmao. That’s not her fault. It would only give you food poisoning if you ate it raw or used bad ingredients 😭😂😂😂
This was nasty, did not even have it in my mouth for 3 seconds, I spat mine out.
Not good. Super crumbly and eggy. definitely not making again.
Genuinely nasty. I spit it out after the first bite.
This was not good. The texture and taste were not there. It was dry and cakey, not a cookie texture at all. And it was bland as all getout! It definitely needs some vanilla, and I think less flour. I made a mug cookie years ago that I loved and was looking for that recipe again, but this one is definitely not it.
It was very good . Although I did add a splash of vanilla 😋
This wasn’t good in my opinion. I tried it 3 different times, twice following the directions exactly. Adding a little bit of milk, using less flour and adding vanilla the third time was better. But it still came out not very good, edible but not dense and eggy like others have said. The top part was better, closer to the bottom of the mug it got worse. Very amazed at the good reviews.
Great snack for after school. Used a handful of chocolate chips as I didn’t feel like measuring them out, and had a half egg in the fridge from some caramel rolls I made recently, so I used that instead of the egg yolk, and it turned out great! added a couple splashes of milk afterwards, and is so good!
I liked it. I followed my microwave and my preference. But
It wasn’t a cookie. Felt more like the inside of a lava cake. It hit the spot for me.
Lovely recipe, easy to make. Highly recommended. Thank you!
Gets the job done when my husband wants a sweet treat! Won’t change your life but what else do you expect from a 60s mug cookie?! Thank you for the recipe 🙂
I don’t understand any of these bad reviews! I’ve had this recipe bookmarked in my phone for years and love it. I add some milk to the mug when it’s done, and it’s perfect!
I feel like this must be written by AI. Somehow it’s the top result for microwave cookie without even being a cookie. It has the taste and texture of a dried out pancake.
Not good. Ive made other recipes before and this just isnt it. At least kinda hit the craving for something sweet and I’m not picky. But ya. Would not choose this recipe again. Needs baking soda or different measurements or something
Made this two different times and it just didn’t come out great. Came out pretty dry like other reviews said. More like a disappointing pancake.
Absolutely terrible. Very rubbery. Dry. Maybe use less flour?
Very good!!
Smells funny. Slightly afraid to eat it, nervous about my wellbeing afterwards.
Tried it and no words – it’s not very good and I definitely wanted more from it.
Awful, a crumbly and crunchy mess. Do not waste the ingredients.
I keep coming back to this recipe after many years!
This could use a few drop of vanilla.
*smidgen
Did not rise
It’s not intended to rise. Other than the benefit from the egg, there’s no additional leavening agent. It’s a 5-minute microwave solution to a quick treat.
Genuinely a decent recipe if you want a cookie in a pinch. It won’t turn out crumbly if you make it right
Would eat again 8/10
it was alright i guess but it was really dry (no offense to who made the recipe)
I tried this, and the batter did not cook properly…
I left it out at room temperature after cooking as it was really hot and it instantly became hard and is now stuck in the mug
Has a different texture than your typical chocolate chip cookie; almost more spongie. However, that’s to be expected when you’re trying to make a cookie in the microwave! It’s just not the same. It does hit the spot when you’re in the mood for a cookie and don’t have time to make them traditionally.
No I need one using a pre package mix
I cooked at 70 percent power just to be safe and it came out perfectly. It has the texture of a chocolate chip cookie bar, more so than a cookie, which is still obviously very delicious.
Definitely follow directions and don’t overcook. Hits the spot when you want a cookie.
Flavor is okay, texture is horrible. Dry, dry crumbly mess. Does it need baking soda? A whole egg? I don’t know the answer but very disappointing.
Mine came out like rubber. Couldn’t eat it.
Made this super quick for my teen that wanted a cookie. It was a bit dry and I added some vanilla. I think I’d put less flour in it next time but it was a good and quick solid recipe!
This was so good!!! I was going to drive to get a Crumbl cookie but made this instead. Delicious and saved me $.
The good reviews are payed review, the recipe doesnot work, please find any other recipe to use. Dont waste your time on this like i have
I followed the recipe exacptly but it just turned into some gross cake blob thing. I think the recipe shouldnt have the egg and it’d probably be actually good and would work
Followed this recipe exactly as stated and got a nasty burnt smelling mess that didn’t even remotely resemble a cookie. Extremely dissatisfied.
Awful! Read the directions and it was so dry making it. Just crumbles! I thought it would at least fill the whole mug, but nope didn’t even rise to half of the mug. Disappointed!
